KY Primary Elections 2024

  • Kentucky has closed primaries, which means that only individuals registered as Democrats or Republicans can vote in partisan races.

  • Primary elections help select candidates who will be on the General Election ballot in November.

Even though the presidential candidates are already set, it’s still important to vote. Voter turnout determines how many delegates are sent to the Democratic National Convention. More voters = more voices!

  • Delegates play a pivotal role in representing their state's choice during the national party convention. They cast their votes based on the preferences expressed by voters in their respective states' primaries. Republican primaries employ a winner-takes-all model where the candidate securing the highest number of votes receives all delegates.

Kentucky’s Primary Election Day is on Tuesday, May 21, 2024. Primary elections help select candidates who will be on the General Election ballot in November.

Some counties and districts will have other races, including selecting candidates to represent a political party in state government positions, such as State Representative. Ballots may also include candidates for nonpartisan races, such as city, county, and judicial races, in order to narrow down the amount of candidates that will be voted on in November. For the 2024 KY Primary Elections, West KY NOW is focusing on sharing information about Calloway, McCracken and Trigg Counties.
