Use Your Voice…Engage with Elected Officials

Local Elected Officials

Your voice is seen through your actions and your vote. It is the most powerful tool you have to break down injustice and destroy the terrible walls many people build. Local engagement is critical since the decisions our officials make impact our lives right here in our “backyard.” What decisions, you might ask? Local government holds the money and develops their budgets based on what the City or County officials believe are important to the people of their community. Local governments make decisions on where to spend money for bike paths, library expansions, animal shelters, city park options, community public pools to be clean, safe and open to all and requirements to keep neighborhood streets and yards clean, just to name a few. Former KY state representative Attica Scott presented a great overview of the impact of local government on allocating budgets.

Tips for engaging with local officials by email, phone, or in person:

  • Prepare your talking points:

    • Write out a one-page fact sheet to give to the local official.

    • Print out your fact-sheet or notes to help you stay on point.

  • Be clear and concise:

    • Focus on ONE issue. Be specific on what you are asking for and be concise about “why” it is important

    • Clearly suggest the desired action you would like them to take (what you want to happen, not happen, or change)

  • Make it personal:

    • Explain how the issue impacts you and your community

    • Emphasize that you care about where you live and your neighbors

  • Ask them to commit to change:

    • End your engagement with the question “will you support me/us/your constituent”?

  • Make sure to follow up:

    • Write a follow-up letter reminding them of their needed commitment to support or vote no on this issue.

    • Thank them for discussing this issue with you and for their vote.

    • Observe if a change has happened, if not, repeat the above, moving to the next level of power

Here is a sample text, of course use your voice to state your issue:

“I am a voting citizen of Calloway County.  I am texting you today regarding the City Council’s proposed measure to provide $50,000 for the City park system.  I am asking you to Vote Yes, on this measure.  By allocating these funds you are promoting the economic development of our community and allowing our children to enjoy an outdoor space that promotes shared sports, healthy activities and community enrichment.  I trust I will have your support.  (add your name and address)”

If you are not voicing what you believe is important for a healthy community, then you have lost the ability to make our community a better place to live.  Use the contact information below to contact your local officials.

Kentucky State Legislators

Use the drop down tabs to find the name and contact information for your state representative and senator. Search on this webpage if you are not sure of your district or if your district is not listed.

During the legislative session, our Legislative Watch Committee monitors bills impacting our 6 cores issues and sends out “action alerts” with information about the bill and a sample text to use when contacting your state legislator. Use this google form to sign up to receive action alerts from our Legislative Watch Committee.

Action Steps (How to share your voice)

During the Legislative Session, the best way to contact state legislators is by calling the Kentucky Legislative Message Hotline at 1-800-372-7181 (En Español 1-866-840-6574)

  • Say your name and address (so they can find your legislators)

  • State WHO you want your message to go to (just your legislators, all legislators, certain committee members)

  • Say your message:

    • “I oppose bills…”  <provide the bill shorthand, for example “SB 6”>

    • “I support bills….”

  • Thank the person for answering the phone :)
